Marco Polo Students in Thailand

An Interview with Marco Polo Students about their study experience in Thailand

Vatel Bangkok welcomed 8 Marco Polo students to study in Thailand for the academic year 2018 /19.  The students came from Vatel schools in Paris, Bordeaux, Brussels, Madrid and Andorra.  The students tell us about their experience studying in Thailand on the Marco Polo Program:

How was your study experience in Thailand?

We have had a really great time here in Thailand.  Whilst the culture and study environment is different from our own country, we have gained new skills and knowledge by studying in a foreign country.  From learning how to speak Thai, making Thai cuisine and participating in various cultural activities, it has been a special and unique experience for us. This is the kind of ‘life experience’ that we would not have received by staying in our home country.

From the day we started our studies in Thailand, we were paired with a local student who helped us adjust to life in Bangkok. This also helped us integrate into our studies better, and make friends both inside and outside of the school.

We also enjoyed organizing a Gala Dinner for the public as part of our practical training at Vatel Restaurant.  This was a great team task with our friends as we had to plan the whole event from the menus, decoration, marketing, entertainment, cuisine and service. We also raised money for charity at the event through auctions and ticket sales.

What was your most memorable activity?

We had some great times and trips whilst we have been here, including a cultural trip with the school to Petchaburi province. However, we would say without doubt for those that went on the trip to Nan in the north of Thailand, this was the most meaningful and heartwarming activity.  We set off on the long drive to the beautiful hills and countryside outside of Nan in order to give donated clothes, shoes and sports equipment to local poor children at a school and orphanage.  We spent two days there, cooking and giving food to the children, teaching some English and playing games. It was a really beautiful experience.

Where would you advise people to travel to in Thailand?

EVERYWHERE! Thailand is a beautiful country full of amazing sights. Whenever we had the opportunity to travel on weekends and holidays, we would visit somewhere.  Our favourite places to go to included Pai, Chiang Rai, Koh Lanta and Hua Hin.  We would also highly recommend visiting Chiang Mai for the Loy Kratong festival in November.
